BALLSTON SPA– An evacuation drill was conducted at three Ballston Spa Schools on Friday, May 8.
School District Collaboration with Emergency Responders Prepares for Evacuation
In collaboration with the Saratoga County Office of Emergency Services, the Ballston Spa Central School District will hold an Emergency Evacuation Drill on Friday, May 8, 2015 for students and staff who attend Gordon Creek Elementary School, Milton Terrace North Elementary School and Wood Road Elementary School. Please know that dismissal for students who attend these schools will be at approximately 12:00 PM on this day.
The detailed planning for an emergency evacuation of three schools has already provided district staff and local emergency responders with improved protocols and communication after examining the many logistics involved with safely relocating approximately 2,000 students and staff. Staging this drill will provide additional important information and feedback as agencies work together with many others from across the county to protect the safety and security of students and staff. This drill involving the participation of multiple agencies and municipalities will impact traffic patterns in the area during the midday hours.
Please know that this and all school district safety drills are part of emergency management planning to prepare for conditions such as security/safety threats, severe weather issues or unexpected facility conditions (e.g. loss of power or heat etc.) that would require the district to evacuate buildings and release students from remote locations that are secure.
Participating in the exercise will be the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, Ballston Spa Village Police, New York State Troopers, New York State Park Police, and local fire and EMS agencies.
The exercise will be held to test radio communication interoperability, evacuation procedures, and incident command structure. A State Police helicopter will conduct a flyover and landing at the Gordon Creek School complex.
“This is a good training opportunity for multiple fire, police, and EMS agencies to come together and conduct a safety exercise of this magnitude,” said Carl Zeilman, Director of Saratoga County Emergency Services.
Traffic may be delayed along the Route 67 area in Ballston Spa during this exercise.
The safety and security of students and staff are and will always remain a top priority for the school district, and additional information about this drill will be released by the end of April. Please watch for more details to be posted on the district website, distributed via SchoolMessenger and remember to follow the district on Twitter for up to the minute information that is officially released by the school district @BSCSD.
