Ballston Spa Schools: Health Expo

The Ballston Spa Central School District’s Health and Wellness committee will be hosting a Health and Wellness Expo on March 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the High School cafeteria and gymnasium. There will be exhibits from each of the school BLTs and a variety of organizations and businesses who will provide information about fitness, healthy eating, bike helmet safety and related health and wellness topics.

The Ballston Journal, Ballston Spa Central School District, Joseph Dragone, Milton Terrace SouthParticipating exhibitors will include Ballston Spa National Bank, Albany Medical Center, Hannaford Supermarkets, Saratoga Center for the Family, Reality Check, local massage therapists, Reiki practitioners, chiropractors, dentists, orthodontists, yoga instructors, as well as many other health and wellness practitioners.

Expo sponsor Elevate Cycles will be donating 25 refurbished youth bicycles to be raffled off throughout the day. The first 200 elementary and 200 secondary students completing a passport of visiting vendors will receive a goodie bag with related information and giveaways. In addition, many other items will be raffled off throughout the day, including gift cards to local businesses.

The Expo is free and open to all children, families and individuals residing in the Ballston Spa Central School District. Partial funding from the district’s current State Farm Insurance Company grant will be used to support this district-wide community event grounded in financial literacy, and health and wellness.

Participants are asked to please bring a non-perishable food item to donate to district partner Saratoga County EOC, who will be in attendance to provide information about the programs and services they provide to families and individuals throughout Saratoga County.

Hannaford Helps Schools

Beginning this week, local schools will start to benefit from a program providing money for needed items, including computers, musical instruments, sports gear, field trips, playground equipment and more.

Hannaford Helps Schools will make cash donations to local K-12 schools when customers purchase eligible products between Sept. 9 and Dec. 1.  The program is in its 13th year and has raised $7.5 million for schools in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Massachusetts.

“Many schools are finding it harder than ever to pay for the equipment and programs that students need,” said Hannaford spokesman Eric Blom. “At Hannaford, we are committed to helping to meet some of those needs by partnering with local educators and our customers through Hannaford Helps Schools.”

As part of the program, customers receive three “school dollars” (equivalent to cash) for every four participating products purchased. School dollars can be turned in to the school or placed in special collection bins at any Hannaford location.

This year’s program involves more than 60 brand partners and more than 700 products, including products from Procter and Gamble, Clorox, Kraft, Unilever, General Mills, Heinz, McCain, and many others.

Each Hannaford store also provides a $1,000 bonus to the school in its area that generates the most donations. Last year, Hannaford Helps Schools made contributions to more than 2,500 schools in the Northeast and raised nearly $780,000 to benefit local education.

Hannaford Supermarkets, based in Scarborough, Maine, operates 181 stores in the Northeast. Stores are located in Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Hannaford employs more than 26,000 associates. For information visit the company Web site at www.hannaford.com.

Hannaford to Celebrate Grand Opening in Malta

Hannaford Supermarkets will celebrate the grand opening of its new Malta store, located at 43 Round Lake Road, with a two-day community celebration on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, the company said in a press release.

The new Hannaford will “serve the growing Malta community and employ about 100 associates, adding jobs to those being created locally by the high-tech manufacturing investment also taking place in the store’s backyard,” the company said.

“Hannaford Supermarkets is excited to bring our signature combination of everyday low prices, quality foods and outstanding service to Malta residents,” said Malta store manager Steve Robyck. “I encourage the Malta community to join us as we celebrate the grand opening of our new store. We look forward to showing shoppers the results of what we have been working on.”

A native of Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake, Robyck will return to the greater Capital Region to manage the Malta store. He has been an employee of Hannaford for 15 years and most recently served as a store manager in Maine.

According to the release the new 35,000-square-foot store includes a number of features “designed to create an outstanding overall shopping experience for customers,” including a butcher shop, produce and seafood departments, a bakery and deli, a full-service pharmacy and a wide variety of organic/natural and gluten-free offerings.

The grand opening celebration will begin on Saturday, May 19 at 7 a.m. The first 300 customers through the doors will each receive a Hannaford mystery gift card valued between $5 and $250 and a personalized reusable bag. Customers also will have the opportunity to win a $50 Hannaford gift card once every 10 minutes between noon and 2 p.m.

Beginning Saturday, customers can also enter to win free groceries for a year from Hannaford. The grand prize winner will receive $5,200 worth of Hannaford gift cards. Four first-prize winners will each receive a $400 Hannaford gift card and 10 second-prize winners will each receive a $100 Hannaford gift card. Winners will be selected by random drawing and announced on July 7.

Samples of recipes created with Hannaford private-label products will be available throughout the day.

The celebration will continue on Sunday, May 20 at 7 a.m. when the first 200 customers will each receive a free Taste of Inspirations Summer BBQ Tote featuring a number of grilling essentials, such as Taste of Inspirations Mesquite and Lemon Pepper marinades, a silicon basting brush, and a $2 off coupon for a Taste of Inspirations product.

In recognition of the grand opening, Hannaford Supermarkets will present a donation of $1,000 to each of the following community organizations: Chango Elementary School, Charlton Heights Elementary School, Francis L. Stevens Elementary School, Round Lake Library, and the David R. Meager Malta Community Center.

The opening of the Malta Hannaford Supermarket & Pharmacy is one of two grand openings planned by the company in New York that day. Hannaford also will open a new store serving the Columbia County town of Livingston, N.Y., on May 19. The two openings will bring Hannaford’s total number of stores in New York to 49.

The Malta store is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pharmacy hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For information visit the company website at www.hannaford.com.
