“They are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘super predators.’ No conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.” [Read more…]
Blog Correction 4/15/16: In the published blog below, “the late Dr. Seuss” is incorrect, and it should have read “Judith Viorst.” We apologize for the error.
According to a Quinnipiac University poll released yesterday, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in the lead for, respectively, the Republican and Democratic nominations in New York’s presidential primary, which is coming up on April 19.
It WAS a Conspiracy
The truth is finally out about Benghazi. It’s now clear that the whole thing was a set-up to trap the opposition into embarrassing itself by claiming that the tragic deaths of Americans in Benghazi was the fault of the Obama/Hilary administration. Tricked into a final report intended to prove themselves right in their ceaseless bleats, the Republican blue ribbon panel failed to do so. It was really slick of Obama and Hilary to set them up this way. There should be a congressional hearing on how the Republicans were so easily fooled.
Don’t Get Sick, Get Even
Efforts to destroy the Affordable Care Act continue, and with the help of the Supreme Court, may succeed. Whoopee, America will be left the only developed country failing to have a viable national health care delivery system for its citizens. I don’t know who this would really please, but it must please somebody, since otherwise why work so hard to undermine a working system? Single payer, universal health care anyone?
Give Us Your Tired, Your Humble, Your Field Workers, Nannies, Maids, and Restaurant Staffs…
I keep waiting for actual substantive criticism of the new immigration policy. It doesn’t sound too bad, actually, though it’s far less than many advocates would like. It does, however, maintain the pool of cheap immigrant labor necessary for many of our industries and services. The issue seems to be something different. I note that popular vocabulary-abuser George Will used his four-dollar words in the New York Times to pretend he never heard of Executive Administrative Action as used liberally by Presidents Reagan and Bush or, it seems, the basis of our government: checks and balances among and between the three branches. I know it’s fashionable to complain about the President doing presidential things without the blessing of those who insist he’s a socialist who wasn’t born here but, after all, he is the President and neither birthers nor Congress are. Exposed as do nothing feet in the trough legislators on immigration, failing to keep the agreement made by their leaders, they should now try to explain why the new policy is wrong and what they would do that is better and more fair. Instead we have to watch the sleight of hand by which we are diverted from the real issues to worshiping fake heroes who — gasp — don’t shut down the Government. Keep it up boys and girls, you’re doing a great job!
The FBI in Peace and War: Bring Me a List of Disgruntled Former Employees – Efram Zimbalist Jr. in “The FBI”
The FBI’s had a rough couple of weeks. First the disclosure that agents masqueraded as journalists to get close to targets. Clever, perhaps, but something that puts legitimate journalists at risk. (Remember journalists? The Fourth Estate? Vital for Democracy?) Then there’s the full exposure of the FBI’s “anonymous” letters to Dr. King, insulting him, threatening blackmail, and encouraging him to commit suicide. The FBI was masquerading then as law enforcement.
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like War Time
Thanksgiving was over, so I soon heard the phrase “War on Christmas” for the first time again this winter. I recall the Letter to the Editor in this paper a few years ago at the dawn of the Tea Party headlined “What Americans Believe.” Besides the arrogance of assuming one can speak for the entire melting pot, there were two memorable bullet points. One was the “belief” that America should be governed by the Constitution, the second was the “belief” that Christianity should be the official religion.” This being the wonderful time of the year that “Season’s Greetings” is seen by some as a liberal (read not Christian) plot to undermine the preeminence of Christmas as the only Winter Holiday to acknowledge. The juxtaposition of the two “Beliefs,” with “Official Religion” being expressly prohibited by the “Constitution” makes me glad ‘Tis the Season to be Jolly.” You have to laugh.
I noted the passing of former Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry (role model to Toronto’s former Mayor), who when asked about the Capital’s winter snow removal program after the government was brought to a standstill by another inch of snow, responded with “We have a plan to get rid of the snow. We call it Spring.”
