John Battenfield, a retired Quad Graphics press manager and avid outdoorsman, was elected president of the Friends of the Kayaderosseras at the organization’s annual meeting in March, according to a press release from the organization. He replaces Siena College professor Larry Woolbright, who will now serve as ex-officio past president.
Battenfield grew up near Cleveland, Ohio. His interest in New York state and the Adirondacks began in 1966 when he received a father/son fishing trip to the West Branch of the Ausable River as a graduation present.
Battenfield also spent several summers honing his canoeing skills as a trip leader at a canoe out-trip camp in Lake Temagami, Ontario.
Battenfield moved to Ballston Spa in 1979. His 16-year career at Quad Graphics included five years working in Brazil and Argentina for two printing companies that partnered with Quad Graphics. After leaving Quad Graphics in 2001 he invested in a small fly-fishing guide business in Argentina and spent the next three years there.
After his return to Ballston Spa Battenfield got involved with Friends of the Kayaderosseras, first as a board member, then as director of annual clean-up efforts. Most recently he managed fish-stocking events. In addition to his volunteer work he mows Village of Ballston Spa parks in the summers and is a temporary employee of the village.
Other new Friends of the Kayaderosseras officers elected to fill expiring terms include Margaret Kinosian, Director of Education and Outreach; Meg Stevens, Director of Conservation; Ralph Karcher, Director of Administrative Services; and Barb Thomas, Secretary. Rick Jarvis, Director of Recreation, was reelected. Fulfilling two-year terms are Blue Neils, Vice President; Charles Hogan, Treasurer; and Mary Kuykendall-Weber, Director of Communications. Stephen Conners serves as Legal Counsel.
Founded in 2004, the Friends of the Kayaderosseras (FoK) now has some 450 members dedicated to conserving and preserving the Kayaderosseras Creek. FoK also maintains nature trails along the creek. Canoe and kayak trips include an early spring trip to assure the creek is free of debris from winter storms.
Key events include an annual Meet the Creek event to inform the public on ways to keep the creek healthy. This year’s event will be held at Kelley Park on July 21.
FoK also sponsors a Creek Stewardship Program in which residents of the Kayaderosseras watershed can use a worksheet to see if their lifestyle is “green.”
