The Ballston Spa Community Band will be holding a 10th anniversary concert at 7 p.m. May 3, 2016, at the Malta Avenue Elementary School. The group was started 10 years ago as a continuing education program through the Ballston Spa Central School District. The first concert was May 3, 2006, in the Malta Avenue school auditorium. Since then, the band has become an independent nonprofit organization with the mission of performing music throughout Saratoga County for the public, free of charge.
The group, which meets year round, has performed many concerts, including the Lake George Community Band Festival and annual Veteran’s Day Concert and has become a staple at the summer First Friday events in the Village of Ballston Spa. The membership has grown from 16 that performed at the first concert to 45 musicians, eight of whom are founding members. The members range from 16 years to 76 years, with a wide variety of playing experience.
The anniversary concert will feature music performed 10 years ago, such as “Selections from The Wizard of Oz,” “Sea Songs” and “Amparito Roca,” as well as some new pieces, including “Mars” from The Planets by Gustav Holst.
