On March 28th 2013, the Times Union published an article that I was more than happy to contribute to. Unfortunately, this article entitled “New chief quietly steps in” by Dennis Yusko, misrepresents my position with regard to the new Director of the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency.
Veterans advocacy is my passion and I applaud and am supportive of any Veteran who steps up to take on the task of learning how to assist their brothers and sisters in arms. My issue is not with the person appointed to head the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency, but rather with Saratoga County who appointed a Veteran with no education or experience in the field of Veterans Affairs benefits, claims, and advocacy.
Recently, Saratoga County attempted to appoint an individual to the director of the Animal Shelter who had experience in the work of the department, but not in the management and leadership needed to direct the large department. The recent selectee to the position of the Director of the Veterans Service Agency has an abundance of management and leadership experience, but no knowledge or experience performing the work of the department.
While being a Veteran should be a minimum requirement of the position of, being a Veteran does not mean you know about VA benefits, claims and appeals. If being a Veteran came with that knowledge, no Veteran would need to seek assistance from a County Veterans Service Agency, they could counsel themselves and file their own claims.
To this point, it is doubtful that Saratoga County would hire a Director of financial operations who did not have any knowledge or experience in accounting and finance, or a Director of Human Resources who did not have any knowledge or experience in human resources. There is a serious problem with Saratoga County’s hiring practices when it comes to appointments.
THIS is the fact I was trying to highlight and it is where the disservice to Saratoga County Veterans originates, not from Mr. Moon himself.
