I wish to share my thoughts on the recent articles written related to the plans to build a Walmart in the Village of Ballston Spa. I feel strongly against a Walmart coming to the village. I believe Walmart is not the right fit for Ballston Spa, and it will have a negative impact on our community.
As a resident of Ballston Spa for 14 years, I’m aware of the fact that the village’s economy is based on local businesses. The small businesses, and the charm of a small village, are the focal points of what attracts shoppers to Ballston Spa, and keeps our community strong. The businesses are unique, independently owned, and all bring something different to the village. They also get very involved in the community through fundraisers for school clubs and sports, hosting popular events in the town, and by participating in First Fridays.
Many of the tourists who come to Saratoga during track season, come to Ballston Spa as well. Most of them come to the village because we are known for our shopping, dining, and spas. Ballston Spa is known for their antique shops, their unique, locally owned restaurants, and the well-known Medbury Inn and Spa. If Walmart came in, the shoppers would bypass many of the small shops and many of the shops could eventually go out of business. Tourists and other Capital District race-fans may choose to detour the route through Ballston Spa to the track, to avoid congestion caused by the addition of a Walmart, bypassing many of our local businesses. Walmart would create so much congestion in the village of Ballston Spa, which could also cause frustration due to traffic from Ballston Spa residents. The addition of a Walmart could also take away from the calm small town vibe of the village.
I believe it would be in the best interest of our community and the sustainability of our local economy not to bring a Walmart into Ballston Spa. This addition will jeopardize the growth and development of Ballston Spa.
