The Vietnam Veterans of America, Capital District Chapter 8 and Adirondack Chapter 79, will present the 7th Annual Honor Our Vets Car Show at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Saturday, August 6, 2016. The Show runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is held on the grounds of the VAMC, located at 113 Holland Avenue in Albany. Rain date is Sunday, August 7.
100% of the donated proceeds from the Show are used to help support various non-government-funded program areas within the hospital, and have been used in the past to purchase coats, boots and basic clothing for needy veterans, blanket warmers for Chemotherapy patients, large screen TV’s in therapy wards and last year was used to help support their Adaptive Sports Program, Team Albany.
This year’s Show is sponsored by the Early Ford V8 Club, Regional Group 147, with corporate support provided by Walmart, Berkshire Bank, Freihofer’s, iHeart Media, DeCrescente Distributing, Stewart’s Ice Cream and a host of generous local businesses, fraternal organizations and individuals.
The Honor Our Vets Car Show is a family-oriented event with music, food, raffles and giveaways, and is open to all categories of vehicles including classics, tuners, imports, exotics, antiques, muscle cars, trucks, motorcycles and military vehicles. The Show is free for spectators, with a minimum Registration Fee of $10.00 for participating vehicles. 40 trophies will be presented to participants, including specialty presentations for Best Paint, Best Interior and Best Under Hood to name only a few, in addition to the Top 25 Picks. There are also 5 unique Veterans Choice trophies, with the recipients picked by the veterans themselves.
Representatives from the VAMC and military and veteran assistance groups will be on hand to provide information and to answer questions about veteran health care and benefits. The American Red Cross will be conducting a Blood Drive in conjunction with the Show, in the 3rd Floor Auditorium from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The presentation of the Colors and patriotic ceremonies will take place at 12:00 Noon.
Come join us and spend the day enjoying all the great vehicles and displays. Again, 100% of all donated Car Show proceeds go to the much-needed support of our local community’s soldiers and veterans treated at the Stratton VAMC. Please help us help those who have placed themselves in harm’s way to guarantee our continued Freedom.

So I was walking back home from the Memorial Day Parade today with the kids and we as usual pass the American Legion Hall. It is a bit before 11:00, and one of the guys (named Bob) invites us in. I am slightly dumbfounded, because even thoug I worked for DARPA and instructed many ROTC students at RPI, I was unable to actually serve due to my asthma. But both my wife and I come from military families so we went in, and my kids had an absolute blast. Liam had like five snow cones (Bob, I don’t know if you are a pusher or an enabler, but you are now my son’s favorite person in the world!) and they jumped in the bounce house thing for like two hours.
Every single person there seemed to be ready to serve, a reflection on what they did before. They were all respectful and in good spirits, even those of advanced age. I was glad my kids went, and even more happy that they saw excellent examples of our vets post service and the commitment they represent to each other and our country.
Thank you Bob and everyone else there at the Henry Cornell Post. Even though I knew none of you and did not belong, you made my family and I feel like we did.
