Community Band hopes to raise the roof, and funds

The Ballston Spa Clergy Association will present a free concert by the Ballston Spa Community Band on Wednesday April 18 at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 202 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa. All are welcome to attend.

The community band is made up of local musicians from all walks of life and practices throughout the year. The group is led by Tracy DeRagon of Ballston Spa High School.

There will also be a freewill donation table in the church’s foyer to support the Ballston Area Clergy Association Community Assistance Fund.

The Association started the Community Assistance Fund in 2009 in an effort to better assist families in the community during times of financial crisis, according to Pastor David Bennett of the First Presbyterian Church of Ballston Spa. The Association pools its resources into one fund. Each church and pastor manages the application and disbursements on a two-month rotating basis.

The fund is managed overall by Pastor Bennett.

In 2011, the fund raised and gave away over $15,000 through gifts from churches, individuals and other community organizations. Offerings are taken at all ecumenical or community events sponsored by the Association. Members of the Ballston Spa community can pick up an application at any of the village churches and drop it off at the church on call. Members of the community are also invited to make tax deductible donations.

The fund hopes to have a small handout for this event to inform both those in need and those who may like to donate to the community-based ministry.
