Cake Placid sweet on Village location

BALLSTON SPACake Placid Owner Jennifer Gates is excited to travel south and open up a second location for her signature bakery, in the Village of Ballston Spa. She is moving into the former Wheats & Sweets shop on Front Street.

cakeplacid2In May, the bakery will offer cupcakes, specialty wedding cakes, and custom cakes for any occasion at both the Lake Placid and Ballston Spa locations.

Gates said this will be a full service bakery, with its focus on gourmet cupcakes and cakes.  The bakery will also feature cake pops, bars, cookies, brownies, pies and pastries. Gates said they are best known for their wedding cakes, which they custom design more than 100 per year.

When looking where to open to a second location, Gates said she decided after many months of searching for the right location, that Ballston Spa was a nice option.

“I liked the small town feel, the camaraderie of the community as well as the fact that there are so many surrounding communities within a 20-30 minute drive. It’s a small town with big opportunity. Saratoga is lovely and honestly it was my first choice, however, after realizing how busy Saratoga was and how much it is growing, and the fact that I had to literally search for an hour for a parking spot, I thought to myself, “would my customers want to go through this much trouble to get a delicious cupcake?,” said Gates.

Gates said after thinking about that, she knew the village was the perfect spot.

“I know it all too well, living in Lake Placid. Main Street is the tourist street, and these folks come around only 3 months out of thecakeplacid1 year during the summer. We depend on our locals, as we will in Ballston Spa,” said Gates.

Gates said what makes them stand-out is that simply their cakes are different. They do not use preservatives mixes and when a customer orders a cake, or any dessert for that matter,  it is made with care, with the finest and freshest ingredients.

Cake Placid has been voted “#1 Bakery in the Mountains 2012-2013” and “Best Bakery in the Adirondacks by Adirondack Life Magazine.”  They have also earned a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor for 2013 as well as ranking “top rated bakery” on Wedding Wire.

The 88 Front Street location in the Village is scheduled to open up some time this month.
