Lucas Aviles Awarded Eagle Scout at Court of Honor

BALLSTON SPA – Lucas Aviles, a member of Troop 2 and the son of Brian and Michele Aviles of Ballston Spa, was awarded his Eagle Scout Award at a recent Court of Honor.

A Court of Honor was recently held at the Ballston Spa Episcopal Church, the sponsoring organization of Troop 2.

To earn the Eagle Scout rank, a scout has to master numerous scout skills and earn a prescribed number of required and optional merit badges. In addition, they must perform many hours of community service and hold leadership positions in the troop. To ultimately earn the rank of Eagle, the scout must plan, organize, supervise and complete a major service project.

Aviles began in scouts in second grade in 2002 when he joined Pack 2, led by Buddha Hurtt, as a Tiger Cub. He earned the Arrow of Light and crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 2, lead by Mr. Tom Vandish, in 2006. Lucas was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, canoed the Allagash River in Maine, and participated in numerous troop activities such as hiking, and camping all year round. He also sailed around Key West, FL out of the Seabase facility. He was a Senior Patrol Leader and attended National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), a BSA sponsored youth training program for scout troop leaders. He earned 28 merit badges while in Troop 2.

Aviles’ Eagle Scout Service Project benefitted Ballston Spa’s Brookside Museum. He located and refurbished the gravesite of the McDonald brothers, the first settlers of Ballston. Once he identified the site using an old map of the area, he cleared trees and brush and then erected a metal fence around the family plot. He also had a sign made and mounted marking the site. The site had not been touched for over 50 years prior to Lucas taking on the project.

Aviles is a sophomore at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia majoring in aeronautical engineering. He is on the aero body team for GT Solar Racing and a member of the flying club. He plans on continuing in Scouts as an adult, sharing his experience, skills and knowledge with younger Scouts.
