9th-Graders Build Eco Cars at TEC-SMART

BALLSTON SPA — Approximately 300 ninth-grade students at the Clean Technologies and Sustainable Industries Early College High School visited the Hudson Valley Community College’s TEC-SMART facility Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, for a hands-on learning experience building eco cars.

During the experience, students collaborated with their peers to design and build eco cars and interacted with business and industry mentors, who provided feedback. The students built model cars powered by renewable energy — a combination of magnesium, saltwater and air.

“It teaches us teamwork, collaboration and innovation,” said James Pinnell, a Ballston Spa freshman, in an article in the Saratogian.

The article went on to say “Juniors and seniors spend the first half of each day at TecSmart before returning to their respective high schools for afternoon classes. So they’re still part of their local school and can take part in sports and other activities.”
