ALBANY – Ballston Spa High School junior Tyler Barnes was recognized this week by the New York State Senate for capturing the school’s first state title in wrestling.

On Monday, March 20, state Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C,I, REF-Glenville) honored Barnes, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association 170-Pound Division 1 State Wrestling Champion. Barnes was presented with a copy of a resolution he sponsored that unanimously passed the New York State Senate.

This is Ballston Spa’s first state championship in wrestling. Barnes won the state title in wrestling on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Times Union Center in Albany with a 5-2 win over No. 3-seeded Zach Ancewicz of John Glenn High School in Elwood, Long Island . Tyler’s father, Terry Barnes, was the runner up for Ballston Spa in the state finals in 1995.

Among those in attendance for the recognition were his father, mother, Amy, sister, Lilly and grandmother Irene Orton. School officials on hand included Superintendent Dr. Joseph Dragone, Athletic Director David Sunkes, Wrestling Coach Harvey Staulters.
