Ehler Promoted to Lt. Colonel in NY Army National Guard

Nikalaus Ehler, the son of New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Scott Ehler, pins on his father’s new Lt. Colonel rank during promotion ceremonies at New York National Guard Headquarters in Latham May 31.

LATHAM – Ballston Lake resident Scott Ehler, a military chaplain, has been promoted to Lt. Colonel in the New York Army National Guard.

Ehler, a veteran of the Iraq War, the Persian Gulf Wa, and Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia, was promoted during a Wednesday, May 31 ceremony at New York National Guard headquarters.

He is the full-time chaplain for the New York National Guard, responsible for coordinating religious support for the 16,000 men and women of the New York Army and Air National Guard. He also conducts weekend retreats for Guard Soldiers and Airmen and their families as part of the military Strong Bonds program and the Relationship Enhancement Program.

Ehler works with the New York National Guard’s Family Support Office in putting together pre-deployment, family resilience, post-deployment support and suicide prevention programs. He served as an enlisted member of the Air Force from 1989 until May 2000. During this period he deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and deployed to Somalia.

He received a direct commission as an Army Chaplain in September of 2005 and served with the Nebraska Army National Guard from 2006 until 2015, when he transferred to the New York Army National Guard.

Ehler served in Iraq with the 867th Corps Support Battalion from August 2006 to August 2007.

Ehler holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, and a Master of Arts from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Master of Divinity degree from Luther Rice Seminary.

Ehler’s awards include: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Aerial Achievement Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal the Kuwait Liberation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and Joint Meritorious Unit Citation award.

Ehler and his wife Amy have two adult children: Nikalaus, who is attending the University of North Texas, and daughter, Devyn, who lives in Lynchburg, Virginia.
