Village Law: Clear your sidewalks or pay a hefty fine

BALLSTON SPA – If you are not removing snow and ice from your residential or commercial sidewalks in the Village, expect a citation four times the cost to have it removed for you.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to step up enforcement efforts and will be engaging an officer from the Village Police Department to patrol and inspect properties.

Village code, section 174-5 reads “it is the responsibility of the property owner to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks in front of their premises within 8 hours after any snowfall in the daytime, and before 12:00 noon on the day following any snowfall or sooner should a hazardous condition be created.  In the event a complaint is received for failure of the owner to comply with the snow and ice regulations, a notice will be delivered to the occupant of the premises stating that the condition be remedied within 24 hours.  Failure to comply will result in the Village performing the work and charging the owner 4 times the actual cost to the Village.”

Resident Mary Anne Priest said, “I see the same houses repeatedly, both in the area of Malta Ave. School and up toward the High School, Middle School in violation of this. Seven years ago I fell with my baby on my back, and two toddlers in tow, and broke my ankle.”

“It’s the same houses over and over again. I’ve stopped and talked to them, I’ve mailed them nice letters. I’d appreciate the extra effort to be sure this is dealt with,” Priest continued.

Trustee Noah Shaw invited residents to email complaints about snow removal to the Village email, [email protected].
