Updated Monday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m. — The deceased have been identified as William and Laura Wintermute, ages 61 and 64 respectively, from the Town of Ballston.
According to an updated press release from the Sheriff’s Office, the Wintermute’s were stopped eastbound on Route 67 waiting to turn into Finley Rd., the couple’s listed address, when they were struck from behind by a pick-up truck operated by Tyler Mort, 28, of Ghent, NY. The collision forced their vehicle into the westbound lane and into the driver’s side vehicle operated by Jason Martindale, 39, of Moreau.
A fourth vehicle was thought to be involved however, it was determined to be a separate accident as a result of the driver swerving to avoid the initial collision.
Laura Wintermute was pronounced dead at the scene. William Wintermute succumbed to injuries a short time later at Saratoga Hopital.
The accident remains under investigation.
BALLSTON – A multi-car accident at the intersection of state Route 67 and Finley Road in the town of Ballston left two people dead Saturday evening, according the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 5:27 p.m., the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received an emergency call for a multi-vehicle accident. Initial reports from the scene indicated there were four vehicles and serious injuries. Emergency crews responded and used the Jaws of Life to extricate two occupants from one of the vehicles. The passenger of that vehicle was provided life saving measures and transported to Saratoga Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The operator of that vehicle was also provided life saving measures but succumbed to her injuries at the scene and was pronounced dead by Saratoga County Deputy Coroner Anthony Perniciaro.
Neither alcohol or drugs are a factor in the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The crash remains under investigation by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Collision Reconstruction Unit, alongside the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Unit.
The identity of those who died is being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Charlton Police Department, the New York State Police, Burnt Hills Fire Department, the Ballston Spa Fire Department, Harmony Corners Fire Department, Community EMS Corps, Galway EMS, Life Net 72 and the Saratoga County Office of Emergency Services.
