“Saratoga’s Got Talent” seeking contestants

BALLSTON SPA – The Saratoga County Fair 2018 talent show, “Saratoga’s Got Talent,” is now accepting applications for contestants. The deadline for entries is July 14 and the competition is open to all ages.

“Many local fairs don’t have a talent competition,” said Debora Leahey, this year’s event manager. “This is a great way for performers to get exposure and experience, in a fun, supportive setting. Our winners will proceed to the State Fair competition in Syracuse later in the summer.”

Leahey, a Ballston Spa resident, was a former talent contestant herself. She started in the late 1980s as a youth in tap dancing, and progressed through the years in both solos and group competition. “One group number that is especially memorable from the Fair was the chimney sweep song and dance from Mary Poppins called Step in Time,” Leahey recalls.

Brittney Kissinger, who grew up in Ballston Spa, got her start at the Fair’s Talent Show and went on to success on Broadway in Annie. Longtime favorite Justin Joyner, from Saratoga Springs, returns to the Fair this year with his band Motion Blur. Justin began competing on the Talent Show stage more than 20 years ago as a young boy.

The “Saratoga’s Got Talent” show accepts entries, at no charge, in singing, musical instruments, dance, gymnastics, storytelling, comedy, magic and other areas. The two age categories are Age 12 & Under and Age 13 & Over. Cash prizes are awarded in daily categories as well as for Best of Fair.

“Competing in the Fair’s Talent Show can really make the fair come alive. This particular event is open not only to residents of Saratoga County but also those in Albany and Schenectady counties since they don’t have a talent competition there,” said Leahey.

Leahey can be reached at [email protected] for more information on the Talent Show. To enter, visit the Saratoga County Fair website:, and click the Exhibitor link to download an application or apply online. To request an application be mailed, email Leahey or call the fair office at 518-885-9701.

Pageant and Miss Saratoga County Fair Queen

In addition to the Talent Show, the Fair offers opportunities for young pageant competitors.

For infant girls on through toddlers, youth, and young women, the Pageant at the Fair offers female contestants a chance to gain poise, confidence and build self-esteem. The competition is held on the first day of the Fair, Tuesday, July 24. A $15 entry fee applies to all contestants. There are eight different age categories starting with age 12 months, with the Miss Saratoga County Fair Queen being selected from young women ages 17 to 21. Entry details for the pageant are online at  in the Pageant section of the Exhibitor Handbook.

“Our Fair Queen is chosen the first day and represents the Fair throughout the week, appearing at many of the specially scheduled events. She continues on during the year within her community,” said Madison Manuel of Clifton Park, who is this year’s manager and was a previous contestant herself. The 2017 Fair Queen was Ryan Freemire of Porter Corners.

“The fair pageant provides the opportunity for girls and young women to develop poise and speaking skills that they will carry through life,” said Manuel.

Manuel can be reached at [email protected]  for more information on the Pageant.
