Diverse range of New Yorkers support Congressman for reelection
Congressman Paul Tonko (NY-20) today announced an updated round of endorsements from local, state and national organizations in his bid for the United States House of Representatives. New York’s 20th Congressional District includes Albany and Schenectady counties, and neighborhoods in Montgomery, Rensselaer, and Saratoga counties. A sample of Tonko’s endorsements are listed below.
“The support of such a wide array of professionals and public servants in our Capital Region communities only serve to energize me further in our campaign for commonsense progressive policies in Congress,” said Tonko. “I pledge to continue to work every single day to meet with voters and hear their concerns and ideas about how best to move our region forward. I am excited and humbled by these endorsements, but we’re taking nothing for granted and no one will outwork us as we approach Election Day on November 6th.”

To date, Tonko has received endorsements from a number of organizations, including the select group below: The New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV), the only statewide environmental organization in New York that fights for clean water, clean air, renewable energy and open space through political action. NYLCV is a non-partisan organization. Since 1989, NYLCV has worked with state and local elected officials on environmental issues to provide objective information about environmental policy to the public, and to hold elected officials accountable.
End Citizens United (ECU), a grassroots-funded group that fights against big money in politics and aims to counter the disastrous effects of the flawed 2015 Citizens United Supreme Court decision by overturning it and reforming our campaign finance system.
The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), an organization of approximately 30,000 licensed physicians, medical residents, and medical students in New York State. Tonko is the only Congressional Democrat MSSNY has endorsed.
The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), a union of 43,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, medical practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. They are New York’s largest union and professional association for registered nurses.
The National Association of Social Workers-Political Action for Candidate Election (NASW-PACE), which represents nearly 120,000 professional social workers statewide.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), New York’s largest public service union with more than 400,000 members from six statewide affiliates.
Peace Action New York State, Peace Action’s New York chapter, a national grassroots organization working to advance nuclear disarmament, promote government spending priorities that support human needs, encourage real security through international cooperation and human rights, and support nonmilitary solutions to international conflicts.
The New York State American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a federation of 3,000 affiliated public sector, private sector, and building trades unions throughout the state, representing 2.5 million members, retirees and their families. NYS AFL-CIO members live and work in every community in our state, and reflect the diversity that makes New York great.
New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV), which works to reduce gun violence through legislative advocacy and education designed to encourage action, influence public opinion and lead to policy change. NYAGV was established in 1993 by Brooklyn mothers galvanized by the senseless shooting death of a teacher in Prospect Park.
The New York State Public Employees Federation (NYS PEF), which works to promote the welfare of its members by representing them with respect to all terms and conditions of employment. PEF shall support and defend the concepts of individual merit and ethical performance as criteria for public service employees in order to best promote efficient delivery of services to the citizens of New York State.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which fights for LGBTQ equality and civil rights for all in New York alongside state and local groups. The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 3 million members and supporters nationwide.
While the group does not officially endorse candidates, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, named Tonko a “Gun Sense Candidate”. Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, The group is the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with more than four million supporters.
Local Political Parties. Tonko has received an endorsement from all five county Democratic parties (Albany, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady).
State Political Parties. The Women’s Equality Party (WEP) and Working Families Party (WFP) have also endorsed Tonko’s campaign for Congress.
